Shimadzu Corporation has launched its latest High Resolution Scanning Probe Microscope, Shimadzu SPM-8000FM. This equipment, flagship model of the company’s scanning probe microscopy offering is developed in collaboration with the Kyoto University and other universities as part of Japan Society and Technology Agency’s “Development of Advanced Measurement and Analysis Systems” program.
Shimadzu SPM-8000FM, with its state of the art optical condenser system and improved laser light non-interference techniques is capable of providing high resolution observations in air and liquids which is at par with those obtained in vacuum, something none of the conventional SPMs have been able to achieve until now.
The solid-liquid interfaces, known as hydration/solvation have a very significant role to play in chemical reactions, charge transfer, heat conduction and lubrication. But with the layer being so thin, it has been hard to measure it, let alone observing it which was impossible until now. But with SPM-8000FMs ultra-sensitive force detection it is now possible to operate its probe at interface to measure the hydration/solvation. The new scanning method makes it possible to analyse both 2D and 3D structures for the first time. Altogether the SPM-8000FM makes it possible to make surface observations as well as take structural measurements of solid-liquid interfaces.
The SPM-8000FM is an efficient piece of equipment from Shimadzu that can be readily used to observe structural changes occurring at the interface of electrode and electrolytes, structure of lipids and other organic molecules in liquids and so on. Thus opening a whole new set of opportunities in research and development in the fields of nanotechnology including biomaterials, catalysts etc.
